Week of favourites...nail varnish

I've always loved nail varnish since I was a little girl, it's something you'll rarely (if ever) see me go without as I just feel my hand looks 'unfinished' without it.

I knew I had a lot of nail varnishes and I think at last count I had around 40 but I was shocked when I tipped them out of their little box to find I'd got 55. I think it may be time to call a halt to the addiction! (Although I know I wouldn't stick to it if I banned myself from buying it, I'm already thinking I'd like a pastel yellow for the summer and maybe a really bright neon blue too)

Favourite brands - Barry M, Rimmel, Fearne Cotton, No7.

Favourite colours - greens, blues, oranges, anything with glitter over the top.

I'd intended to start my week of...I talked about in my last post but when I reached for my camera I realised I'd got some pics from my work outfit on Friday to post up. I've just taken the pics for my first in the week long feature so that should be up tomorrow!

I thought this H&M jacket I bought when I went to Huddersfield a couple of weeks ago made me look a little bit like I was in Harry Potter (and I liked the way the floral lining clashed with my floral dress) but one of my colleagues asked me why I was wearing a dressing gown so clearly I was not pulling it off very well?!

Cardi - Urban Outfitters

This was originally my sister's and when she ordered it off the website I didn't like it. Then she found it was too big for her so I tried it on and I actually love it on. I've always gone for a browse in UO but never bought anything from there, mainly probably cause I'm a cheapskate!

Sunglasses - Primark

I was in the queue when I saw both of these, they were reduced to 50p each so I snapped them up in the hope it won't be too long before it's lovely and sunny. I had a pair of aviators last year but who knows where they've gone? (I probably broke them in all honesty!) I believe this also counts as my first official holidaywear purchase.

When I met my friend Tilly for a catch up the other day she had this beautiful neon green shade on so I had to go shopping the next day and get it!

These were on the £1 sale rail as I walked in (to buy some tights...that place sucks you in I tell you) and I thought for that price you can't really go wrong! I'm thinking I'll wear them with a t-shirt and Converse.

Going back to work on Monday after two weeks off was a bit of a struggle I have to say! But unfortunately my dreams of winning the lottery (despite not playing) have not come true...at least I was back at home so I had the use of my full wardrobe again instead of living out of a suitcase. Although two weeks in leggings, baggy shirts and t-shirts was lovely.

(I'd also like to apologise my dress doesn't seem to be sitting right on any of the photos!)

Laura Mary Carter is one half of one of my favourite bands from my teenage years - Blood Red Shoes. She is just desperately cool! My love for her was only cemented when I saw them live at Wolverhampton in 2007. I think I just spent the whole time shouting 'I love her' at my friends. She's always in cutesy little vintage dresses or really laid back casual clothes. And her hair is beauts, especially when she has her fringe.

Anyway it's safe to say she's definitely in my top three girl crushes!

I love a good earring! Have seen the crosses on a few people and really liked them so picked these up, also these mix and match ones (love the feather especially). Not so sure about the ear cuff but I figured it was worth a go!

Vitamin E hand and nail treatment and Vitamin C skin reviver - Bodyshop

My hands are all cracked and horrible at the mo so hoping the Vitamin E will sort them out! And I tried a sample of the Vitamin C before and it was fab, really keeps your skin feeling smooth and your make up on for ages so wanted to make sure I bought it asap.

Jacket was in the sale for just a fiver so I had to get it! Going to wear it to work I think. And we all know my obsession with leopard print so this shirt was a must-have.

I don't think anyone could argue they wouldn't want to dress like Alexa. She is the ultimate purveyor of laid-back chic and always looks effortlessly cool. Just as at home in the front row of a fashion show as she is in the middle of a field for a music festival, if you look up the word cool in the dictionary - there's probably a picture of the Chung right there.

Okay so yesterday I looked like a children's tv presenter and today I felt I'd gone a bit school mistress!
I love a good look round Cow in Birmingham and especially enjoy their sale rail at the Digbeth store, most of which is £3. This is where this dress came from. Have had mixed reviews, some really like it, some not so sure. I guess it's weird for me to wear a longer length dress but I love the pattern and colour of it really.

I've never owned a lace collar before but that now seems a little silly to me as they are the perfect way to jazz up anything with a plain neckline, I've also seen people actually using them as necklaces too with a lower-cut top.

The top left hand one is my one which arrived a couple of days ago from ebay, it only cost me £6.40 including delivery and I'm so happy with it! Can't wait to start wearing it! (It's available here if you want one)

Zooey Deschanel is THE name on everyone's lips right now. She's showing her quirky side in new programme New Girl but even before that she was wowing both sides of the Atlantic.

I think what she's really done is found the style that works for her and stuck to it religiously. Prom-style dress - check, cutesy volumised hair - check, simple make-up - check, heels - check. While not all of us would be able to pull the sweet and girly look off as well as Zooey, I think it's a bit of a lesson to us all that you don't have to be a slave to the latest trends to look hot to trot!

So while I won't be wearing a prom dress to the next red carpet event I attend (as I do regularly...failing that when I next nip to Sainsbury's), I will be applauding wearing what YOU like, as often as you like.

So I took a trip to Birmingham on Sunday to see my good friend Lauren who'd come up for a visit before jetting off to New Zealand for six months (jeal). And as usual I didn't come home empty handed, in fact I went a bit accessories crazy.

(I went in there as a joke to harp back to my pre-teen years but I got sucked in by the sale!)

The teal hat is SO COMFY! And I can never resist anything leopard print, especially as this has ears! Enjoyed getting a ring for my little finger. Oh and the glasses - considering getting some geek glasses when I finally get my prescription for my peepers renewed, what do you think?

Headband and owl clock necklace - Forever 21

(Please excuse the scary faces!)

Enjoying this headband even though there's bits missing, it was in the bargain bins (cute owl was also in the sale). I LOVE Forever 21, although the lights in there are mega bright? I always get a headache. And I was a little disappointed as they seem to have replaced their extensive leopard print section on the top floor with neon brights.

Nails and rings...a week in the life of my left hand

Now the eagle-eyed among you will spot there are only six pictures below. It's not because I don't know how many days there are in a week, I just have six pictures and that's the way it is amigos!

Anyway, as I'm such an eager beaver when it comes to sporting oversized rings and am also an avid collector of nail varnishes (better than stamps, right?), I thought it might be fun to show how my hand looks over a period of a few days.

The main lesson I learned from this is how truly chubby my hands really are.

Celeb clobber...Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey has been hotly tipped to be one of the biggest stars of 2012 after seemingly bursting on to the music scene unannounced like so many before her (Jessie J, Florence Welch - and her machine of course, Ellie Goulding all spring to mind as the obvious choices in the last few years).

Her voice is almost haunting, it's like Florence mixed with Adele mixed with all the sadness you've ever felt in your life mixed with a lovely beat mixed with something a little indescribable. And before you even get to the voice, there's the looks.

She's already appeared in magazine shoots and much has been made of her cosmetically enhanced lips - whatever you think about her forays into surgery at such a young age, you can't deny the girl got looks.

Floral displays (whether it's round the head or the body) seem to be her big thing. She's got a real vintage princess thing going on but with a little bit of an edge.

Well I took the plunge recently and posted my first Youtube video (link), which gives anyone who sees it a bit more info about me and also a delightful foray into the YamYam accent. Another shopping trip to H&M for me...and this was the month I decided I wasn't going to buy any clothes! I had a £5 voucher from the receipt of my previous trip but of course ended up spending much more than that.

Two rings - one gold, one silver, to add to my ridiculous collection. And some hair grips, I thought the little bird ones with dangly bits were really sweet and quite vintage looking, will be interesting trying to incorporate them in to an up-do.
Beanie hat - I really love hats but most of mine seem to have disappeared somewhere. Anyway, this one makes me look like Badly Drawn Boy which can only be a good thing.
Scarf - it's got to be all of ten seconds since I last bought a scarf. But I don't have a light blue one and that was a good enough excuse for me (I've just looked up while typing this and I do actually but it's a big scarf not a head one
Kimono-style jacket - I fell a bit in love with this when I saw it. It's beautiful and hangs lovely. Normally I would say to style it with skinny jeans, a vest top and big heels but I don't actually wear jeans all that often, let alone skinny ones. I don't really know how I'm going to style it or where I'm going to wear it but it had to be mine.

I am a massive, massive fan of big rings and some of my favourite places to get them include H&M (there's not a huge selection on their website unfortunately but I find if you go in store they're brilliant for big round or oval rings or the very thin little rings I like to wear on my pinkies and my first fingers) and Primark (which has the world's worst website but is fab when you go in because the rings are so cheap you don't care if you break/lose them which is a very common occurrence for me).

2011 has been the year I discovered how much I loved having red hair after a lifetime of brown and blonde, I topped up my collection of big rings, cardies and headscarf as well as embracing big eyebrows, big earrings, fur and harnessing an even greater love for all things vintage!

T-shirt from Primark. It's from the men's section but I loved the picture on it. I think I'm going to wear it tomorrow with a denim shirt, bandeau black skirt, leggings and booties. But I think it could also be girlied up with a nice skirt.
Long top from H&M. Just to wear with leggings and a long necklace for slobbing-out wear.
Orangey dress from H&M. I wore this today with tights, brown riding boots and my vintage blue bird scarf round my head. I love simple H&M dresses for work.

Boots from Primark. I've been after some flat ankle boots for a while now and I quite like how manly these looks. I also like the fact they weren't completely plain. Think they will look ace with some chunky socks.
Leopard print dollies from Primark. I am a sucker for anything leopard print and my former dollies were falling to pieces so I when I saw these I thought I'd buy them for when the weather heats up (hopefully).

1. Barry M blue moon

I love a good blue nail varnish and this one is much lighter than any of the ones I've got already. Think it would look fab with a bit of glitter over it or even as part of a design with some darker blues.

2. Rimmel steel grey

Love this! It's almost got a brown tone to it and if you Google the colour you'll see it looks lovely on.

3. Barry M once upon a time

Glitter on the nails is always a win and this would look fab over the range of purple nail colours I've already got.

4. Maybelline deep red

I never wear red clothes so maybe that's why I've shied away from most red nail varnish colours (although the one in the Fearne Cotton collection is fab). But I like this one a lot.

Celeb clobber...Fearne Cotton

Anyone who's ever talked to me for longer than about five minutes will know I have a massive girl crush on Fearne Cotton. She's the epitome of effortless laid-back style. She always looks just right without looking like it's taken her five hours to get ready, and when she's wearing even the simplest of outfits she always gives it that little twist to keep it interesting and true to her style.

Key pointers: just-got-out-of-bed hair, plenty of kohl, tattoos, big accessories (rings, headbands, bags), rocker t-shirts, Converse, socks with heels, red lipstick for the red carpet.

My Christmas day:

1. Opening presents

I got this beautiful bug necklace from Topshop. (Also the jumper I'm wearing in this pic is a Primark men's one. Love looking in their sale for comfy jumpers to wear at home/in bed as this one was only £3 and is much comfier than most of their women's ones)

2. A lovely meal with the family

Candles, food, laughter. Lovely.

3. What I wore

I didn't really manage to get a good picture of what I was wearing!

Nail varnish - blue Barry M with blue glitter (just your average glitter you find in craft shops) over the top.

I want...a fur coat

Unless you've not noticed - fur coats are EVERYWHERE and have been since the first hint of cold weather all those months ago. Now my top tip for fur is to go vintage, two of mine are vintage and both were at a much more affordable price than the ones I've been seeing online (plus they were in mint condition). Of course, the deluge of leopard fur around is right up my street but I also just love fur because it keeps you so warm and instantly makes your outfit. I always get comments, particularly about my light coloured one we've christened Roxy.

Anyway, the three above are (in my humble opinion) some of the best on the web at the moment. (At the moment all of them are in the sale so the prices were right as of December 24, 2011)

1. H&M £19.99

Although it's not the best one I've ever seen, you can't really complain if you're going to the shops with a twenty and coming back with a fur. It's quite an unusual colour and I think it would look great kept casual with some jeans or leggings and some long tan boots.

2. Topshop £100

Yep, this is a bit steep (and it was MUCH more than that in the sale) but it is pretty adorable and I love the fact it's got a hood on it.

3. Miss Selfridge £50

I adore the print on this jacket! I also like the fact it has buttons rather than the hooks you normally get so that makes it a bit different as well. Can totally see this with a little black dress and a big beehive.

The birth of Spero Rose...

Greetings readers old and new. This is my brand new blog after around two years on World of Harriet. I decided to make the transition to hopefully put a bit more focus in my blogging and motivate me to really get back into it.

Also, because I'm kind (and I like to ramble on a bit), I've answered the following questions so you know what to expect.

WHAT'S THIS BLOG ALL ABOUT?
I'm hoping to focus mainly on fashion, both vintage and new - inspiration, new buys, what I wore etc. although from time to time I may pop up with some of the broader posts which were on the old blog. I've got plenty of ideas and you may just have to bear with me while I hone them down into manageable/possible ones.

WHO ARE YOU?
I'm a 21-year-old Midlands girl who earns her keep writing and also likes to write in her spare time.

WHAT DO YOU SPEND YOUR TIME DOING?
I'm always listening to music and have normally got my phone in one hand so I can tweet away and some form of food in the other... I love Tumblr (although I'm very lax at updating my own, something else for the New Year's Resolutions list) and I also love shopping...don't we all. Oh and I love tattoos.

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
I don't know how I'd describe it, I never really dress to fit in with the trends. I'd say I have key pieces such as leopard print, vintage dresses, fur coats, bold nail varnish, a scarf either round my head or my neck, tacky rings and big jewellery in general. Bit of backcombing on the old mane and penciling in the eyebrows and I'm good to go.

FAVOURITE SHOPS?
I'd say 80 per cent of my wardrobe is H&M, Primark or vintage.
